By displaying the HSE Law poster* you are making a promise to your workforce
Employers have a legal duty under the Health and Safety Information for Employees Regulations (HSIER) to display the poster in a prominent position in each workplace or provide each worker with a copy of the equivalent leaflet outlining British health and safety laws.
By displaying the Health and Safety Law Poster in your workplace you are telling your employees that you are responsible for their health and safety.
You are telling them:
What Employers must do for you:
- Decide what could harm you in your job and the precautions to stop it. This is part of risk assessment.
- In a way you can understand, explain how risks will be controlled and tell you who is responsible for this.
- Consult and work with you and your health and safety representatives in protecting everyone from harm in the workplace.
- Free of charge, give you the health and safety training you need to do your job.
- Free of charge, provide you with any equipment and protective clothing you need, and ensure it is properly looked after.
- Provide toilets, washing facilities and drinking water.
- Provide adequate first-aid facilities.
- Report injuries, diseases and dangerous incidents at work to our Incident Contact Centre: 0845 300 9923
- Have insurance that covers you in case you get hurt at work or ill through work. Display a hard copy or electronic copy of the current insurance certificate where you can easily read it.
- Work with any other employers or contractors sharing the workplace or providing employees (such as agency workers), so that everyone's health and safety is protected.

Remember too that the HSE law poster has been updated. Research showed that the previous versions of poster and leaflet were visually unappealing and rarely read. The new versions have been completely re-designed to be more readable and engaging, and are available in other formats as part of HSE's commitment to make health and safety information more accessible. This new poster must be displayed from 2014. To help avoid an unnecessary burden on businesses, the HSE Board has set a five-year transition period for replacing the current poster and leaflet. They must be replaced by the new poster or pocket cards by no later than 5 April 2014.
